About Us
The first issue of The West Georgia Beacon rolled off the presses on Thanksgiving Day week in 1997, and has been gaining in popularity ever since as people discover how quality local journalism can make a difference in their community.
The Beacon was founded by journalists Leo and Marty Hohmann and it continues to be independently owned and operated by the Hohmann family. The paper added staff writer Ada Ezeokoli in August 2004 and she has become an award-winning feature writer with a knack for story-telling and creative photography.
We are a weekly paper with a regional flair, focusing on local news in Heard, Troup, Coweta and Meriwether counties. Now, we are able to come into your homes electronically as well as through the actual newspaper and we hope you enjoy your reading experience here at wgbeacon.com. Remember that what you see online is but a small portion of the content published each week in the print edition of The West Georgia Beacon.
Whether it’s online or in print, our goal is to inform, enlighten and entertain our readers, and to do so with fairness and integrity. That means we have an uncompromising commitment to seek and print the truth.
We report in-depth local news that is not available elsewhere, and we provide a forum for the open exchange of ideas important to West Georgians. By informing citizens, we empower them.
The West Georgia Beacon, though it is only nine years old, has earned awards for outstanding journalism from the Georgia Press Association, of which it is a member in good standing.
Since the news we print often affects your lives, it is our journalistic responsibility to make sure our facts are straight before going to press with an article. Even so, mistakes happen, and we ask that if you see a factual error in The Beacon that you would report it to us so we can correct it.
