High school football report

Cavs, Braves need wins in final two weeks to ensure state playoff berths

By Leo A. Hohmann

Callaway and Heard County both lost last week, making their roads to the state high school football playoffs a bit tougher. But they still control their own destinies.

With two weeks remaining and only the top four teams headed to post-season play, the standings in Region 5AA are bottled up with a three-way tie for second place. Callaway, Heard and Rutland all enter this week with 4-2 region records. Marion County is on the outside looking in, but still has a shot to make the playoffs if it wins its final two games against Callaway and Rutland.

Callaway, after winning its first four region games rather easily, lost its second in a row last Friday at Macon County, 18-6. The Cavs’ high octane offense has virtually disappeared in their last two games and Coach Pete Wiggins will be looking to rejuvenate that offense this week at home against Crawford County. They finish the regular season with a Nov. 9 contest at Marion County. Wiggins and his staff will try to get the Bray cousins, Dray and Quan, in the open field where they can let their speed work to their advantage. Fullback Tharius Tigner also has been off controlled by opposing defenses the past two weeks and he will try to rev up his bruising power game.

Heard County, meanwhile, fell flat against Rutland last Friday, getting blown out 42-6. The Braves will try to regroup this Friday, Nov. 2, at Pike County, then come home on Nov. 9 for a matchup with woeful Lamar County, which has yet to beat a region opponent.
Unlike Lamar, Pike is a dangerous team.

“Pike is good,” said Heard Assistant Coach D.J. Curbow. “They run their offense and they execute real well so they’re hard to stop.”

Curbow said the Braves had “played great for six weeks in a row” so a let down could be expected at some point. It was the extent of that let down against Rutland which concerned the coaching staff. The Braves displayed sloppy tackling and fumbled the ball at least eight times last Friday. That type of performance won’t translate into a win against anyone in Region 5AA.

“I guess they got caught up in thinking how good they were after the Callaway win but they were brought back down to earth,” Curbow said. “Hopefully we’ll bounce back this week (against Pike).”
